An appreciation of Sr Joseph Attracta Sweeney
She was the only girl and had seven brothers so she was very special.
She took good care of her brothers and exercised a certain control over them while they in their turn did everything in their power for her.
She had a specially close relationship with her mother and took care of her.
Later on, as a nun she stayed for some time in the Convent in Foxford and went to Straide each day to take care of her mother.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity on 6th January 1949 and made her Final Vows on 21st August 1954.
As her religious name, she took Joseph Attracta - St. Attracta being the patron saint of the western diocese of Achonry.
Her first ministry in Religious life was the care of children in Lakelands. At different times in her later life she cared for orphaned and disabled children in St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's.
Sr. Attracta spent seven years in Clarinbridge caring for disabled and needy youths. She later helped with the care of children in hospital situations - in St. Vincent's, Temple Street, Cappagh, Hackney and Clydebank.
Sr. Attracta was portress in Milltown for years and helped with the catering there.
People who came to the door were very appreciative of the happy smiling portress.
Visitors to the Convent greatly appreciated her cheerful welcome and her generous hospitality.
Sr. Attracta was a friendly and gentle community member.
When the time came that she herself was in need of care she was transferred four years ago to the Marlay Nursing Home near Rathfarnham. She was very happy there and was delighted when members of our community visited her. She welcomed them and was very hospitable to them.
Sr Attracta became friendly with the staff of the Nursing Home and held them in the highest regard. We are grateful for the excellent care she received in the Marlay Nursing Home from the first day of her entrance there right up to the last day of her final illness.
Sr Attracta died very peacefully at 5.45 pm Thursday 23rd February 2012. Two Sisters from the Stanhope Street Community were with her when she died.
